Helping Hand (Or Feet Really!)
24th Annual Cancer Walk for Cancer Research

This is one of the fundraising events held by the Hot Springs Village Groups that I would like to support at our convention. It only requires us to donate new or gently used shoes that we no longer want. I don’t know about you, but I have at least three pairs of shoes right now in my closet that I do not wear and probably will never wear. I heard about this while I was at Lion’s Bingo one night and I thought it was a great idea! I truly think all of us could bring a pair of shoes to donate, even if you are flying in or don’t have much room in your car from all the donations you may be bringing! So if you think this is something you would like to help out with, please consider bringing that pair of shoes or two that you no longer want to the convention, so we can help support this group.
It is a shoe drive that serves a dual purpose. Helping to support cancer research but also supporting families in lower-income countries who could benefit from them.

Why collect shoes?
For several reasons: first, it is a fundraising event for cancer research in our community. Second, it is a way to support us in a non-financial way. Third, we can clean out our closet and get rid of shoes we no longer need or shouldn't be wearing anymore because of back, foot, or balance issues. Fourth, we keep these shoes out of landfills and give them a second life where to people who might need them most.
When does it end?
We will be collecting the shoes the entire convention event. The boxes will be in place starting on Thursday.
Where can I drop off the shoes?
There will be a couple of boxes at the convention for you to place them in. After the convention, we will take the boxes to the local chapter in Hot Springs Village.
What kind of shoes are acceptable?
All kinds and all sizes. They only ask that the shoes be new or gently used.
Where do the shoes go?
They go to one of several low-income countries around the world where education and job opportunities are scarce. People sell these shoes to support their families. The Cancer Research Group gets a donation amount depending on the total number of shoes they provide. With this fundraiser, they can help lift people out of poverty and give them a drive and purpose to support their communities. This also supports cancer research efforts here at home.
